Ever dreamt of embarking on a quirky road trip, punctuated by unique roadside attractions? Have you got a sweet tooth for both travel and, well, apples? Then pack your bags, because we're taking a trip to Northumberland County in Ontario, Canada, to explore a truly unforgettable landmark: The Big Apple!

Forget the bustling streets of New York; this Big Apple offers a slice of small-town charm, a heaping helping of family fun, and a fascinating story that might just surprise you. Nestled north of the town of Colborne in Cramahe Township, this roadside marvel offers a serene country setting and a whole lot of "a-peel."

But before we dive into the juicy details of what awaits you at The Big Apple, let's address a common misconception. Many believe the idea for this colossal fruit originated in the fertile minds of North American entrepreneurs. Prepare to be deliciously surprised!

The Big Apple's Unexpected Origin Story: Thank You, George Boycott!

You might be shaking your head in disbelief, but it's true! The Big Apple wasn't conceived stateside. Its genesis is much more international, and perhaps even more surprising. The brainchild behind this iconic Canadian landmark is George Boycott, an Australian immigrant to Canada.

But where did Boycott get his inspiration for building a giant apple? The answer lies in another colossal fruit, albeit one of a completely different kind. Think sunny shores, tropical breezes, and a very large, prickly fruit. That's right: The Big Apple's roots (pun intended!) can be traced back to the Big Pineapple in the Sunshine Coast Region of Australia.

Boycott, captivated by the Big Pineapple's success as a tourist attraction, envisioned a similar landmark for the region around Colborne. Recognizing the area's rich apple-growing heritage, he decided to swap the tropical fruit for a local favorite: the apple. And thus, The Big Apple was born, offering a distinctly Canadian twist on an Australian inspiration.

Having visited the Big Apple numerous times, I can attest to its hectic atmosphere. It's undoubtedly a fantastic place to experience, but be prepared to pack your credit card – things can get expensive quickly! However, don't let the price tags deter you, especially if you're travelling with kids. There are surprisingly some free gems to be found, like the free mini golf, the sheer thrill of riding the small train, and even the chance to encounter friendly animals at the petting zoo.
